Park Middle School
Cultivating a Community of Lifelong Learners Empowered to Build a Better World

Academic Supports

In cultivating a community of lifelong learners, Park Middle School is dedicated to providing the support necessary for all students to be successful. Because homework completion is one imperative piece to student learning, Park Middle School practices a Multi-Tiered Academic System of Supports (MTSS-A) that provides time, quiet spaces, and extra help to students, so homework gets completed and learning takes place.

Tier 1 Academic Supports

Power Hour

Power Hour is available to all Boys and Girls Club students on a voluntary basis. It is an opportunity for members to complete daily homework assignments.

Tier 2 Academic Supports

Team time

Team Time is assigned to any Park student who did not complete homework from the previous day. When a student has completed the work for which Homework Zone was assigned, they will be dismissed to go home or to Power Hour.

  • 3:05 – 4:00 pm Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays
  • Students will call home when assigned to make after school arrangements with their families
  • Staffed by teachers in teacher classrooms
  • Students will receive a pass, during their last class of the day, reminding them to attend
  • Students may be assigned Team Time during their lunch time if they do not/are not able to attend after school

Learning Center

Learning Center is scheduled by a counselor or administrator and provides time for students to complete missing work during a class period in the school day. Learning Center is bet suited for students who need structured help to complete school work and are unable to participate in after school supports.

  • Offered as a class on X and/or Y Days
  • Scheduled by Counselors and Administrators and staffed by Park teachers
  • Students will undergo a schedule change to add Learning Center to their school day

Academic Check in/Check out (ACICO)

ACICO is assigned by the school counselor or IEP Manager when a student has been struggling to pass one or more classes for an extended period of time. In ACICO students are provided:

  • Morning check-ins with an assigned mentor
  • Regular academic feedback from teachers
  • Afternoon check-outs with assigned mentor to check progress and create a plan to complete work.
  • ACICO may be combined with other academic or behavior supports

Tier 3 Academic Supports

Academic Intervention

Academic Intervention is scheduled by a counselor or administrator and provides time for students to complete missing work individually or in a small group during one or more school days.  Academic Intervention is best suited for students who need structured help to complete school work.

  • Scheduled by a counselor or administrator and staffed by counselor, administrator, or additional staff

Additional Academic Supports

Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for Academics (MTSS-A)

If academic concerns continue , a meeting including parent/guardian(s), student, teachers, counselor, SAT program coordinator, and administrator may be scheduled to determine if further interventions are needed to support the student’s success in school.
